Things I swore I would never do...
Topping the list? Voluntarily allowing or enabling my children to read Captain Underpants. I hate the idea of censoring books, but I've learned I hate potty humor more. BUT, it turns out that seeing my very reluctant reader reading and liking it outweighs even my dislike of potty humor. So, yeah, I did go to the used bookstore and voluntarily pay money for an entire book based on the worst of all bad kid jokes.
Ummm...let's see. I know there's more, but letting go of my ban against Captain Underpants was a pretty big internal issue and I think it deserves an entire post all to itself.

I'm with you on not wanting to ban any books. That said... I was so glad that Padawan Learner didn't even know about those books until he was older, and then he thought they were beneath him. Yeah, one potential headache avoided at our house. I hope he moves on to something else soon - for your sake and sanity!
He likes Harry Potter, but he's not at a point that it's a comfortable, relaxed read. And, sadly, about the time that he moves on from Captain Underpants, the youngest will be ready for them.
It's been so hard not to push my favorite books onto the kids. Yes, dammit, you will LOVE this book because I did 30 years ago.
